Concrete Field

Hover, Over, Me

THE GRUNEWALD CHURCH SESSION is the first recording of a live session of the Brueder Selke under their alias CEEYS. Cello and keys of a Boesendorfer Imperial are the main components. A particularly feature is the use of some original restored electronic instruments manufactured by the GDR-based Elektroakustische Manufaktur in Erlbach one of the four towns of the legendary Saxon Musikwinkel in the historic Vogtlandkreis in the 1970s and 1980s. While the tracks present the sensation of a sound-exploring performance in the inspiring architecture of an old ancient church, the session can be seen as a sketchbook or a request for their following studio album CONCRETE FIELDS

A subtle sense for narrative, cinematic moments pervades the whole album:

"Our studio album CONCRETE FIELDS is a remembrance of our childhood growing up in Europe`s largest Plattenbau landscape – Marzahn-Hellersdorf, Berlin, East Germany. In the last decade of the GDR the endless grey blocks of cold concrete, steel and glass communicate only anonymity and oppression. On the other hand we started to learn our main instruments, cello and piano and we only dreamt of the day we could finally play chamber music together.

The first common classical concert we then performed in a church. After the fall of the wall and during the 90s the region kept a blend of an edgy feeling of departure yet vague melancholy and we tried to capture this in some compositions. We are still very thankful to hold those early thoughts in chronological order and in the form of a live album before the studio album. Now here is an authentically haptic form of our first full length release. In the late eighties, we used cassettes to make recording trials of various radio nights on a Stern-Recorder. A big bow to Matthias and his lovely boutique oscarson for making this now a beautifully handmade physical package." – Brueder Selke

THE GRUNEWALD CHURCH SESSION was written by Brueder Selke as CEEYS and recorded as one performance in the beginning of 2015 at the Grunewaldkirche in Berlin by Friedrich Stoermer. While he mixed the session at Komet Studio it was mastered by Martyn Heyne at Lichte Studio. The single OPAL GLASS was released on 22nd of April, 2016. The album THE GRUNEWALD CHURCH SESSION was released on May 27th, 2016 digital via 1631 Recordings and on February 11th, 2022 in the form of a limited cassette by oscarson (osc no. 41).
